Mere weeks after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when the world was desperately in need of heroes, I tuned into a potentially cheesefest of a show on The WB and fell in love. That show was of course Smallville and now, after ten years and 218 episodes, it is over. During that time period I’ve earned three diplomas, lived in six different cities, visited seven countries, come out of the closet, met countless friends, held numerous jobs, and became an uncle twice over but amidst all of these changes and experiences, one thing has remained constant – the adventures of a young man on a journey to become Earth’s greatest hero. No matter what else was going on in my life I could count on that one hour each week to entertain, thrill, move, and wow me to a point where I could forget everything else. Not every episode has been a masterpiece nor have all performances been award worthy but even at its weakest, Smallville could touch a cord in me to make me smile and sometimes that’s all you can ask of an old friend.This week’s two-hour series finale capped off a record-breaking run for a sci-fi/comic book/superhero-based television series and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer show. There have been ups and downs to numerous to list in one article but from episode 1, Clark Kent’s journey has been paramount and above all worthy of our years of viewership.
Recent episodes of the show have seen Clark turning away from both his birth and adoptive parents by selling the Kent family farm and shutting down the Kryptonian Fortress of Solitude to forge a path of his own and forget the past. He thinks this is the only way to become his own man and meet his destiny, but we all of course all know better than that. Clarks needs these supportive figures to keep him sane so it was particularly rough last week when we learned that Lois has gotten the jitters about going through with their marriage worrying that she’d be taking him away from saving the world.
Leave it to the great Chloe (Allison Mack) though to step in and force Lois to read the vows that Clark has written for the wedding. After reading his heartfelt words we get my first favorite moment of the finale with Lois screaming, “I’m such an idiot!” and running off to prepare for the wedding. Clark has his doubts about the wedding as well but in a wonderfully shot and scripted scene Lois and Clark work it out with a genuine expression of their feelings for each other. There may have been a door between them but both of them, and not just Clark, could see right through it.

The wedding scene was beautifully shot with great choices of music and lighting. Seeing the spirit of Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) sitting next to Martha (Annette O’Toole) was more emotional than I could have hoped to imagine. In fact, I’m willing to bet that most fan were wiping tears from their eyes for most of the first hour. It may not have been action packed but the writing and character work was exceptionally done and a testament to the writers for bringing this all together so nicely.Things pick up a bit when the possessed Oliver (Justin Hartley) tries to take away Clark’ cheap designer wedding gown ;s powers with a ring of gold kryptonite just before the happy couple is about to say “I do.” Chloe once again saves the day by tossing the ring aside and allowing Clark to bring Oliver back to the light and away from Darkseid’s grasp. This sets the stage for the final hour where Darkseid’s Apokalips planet comes hurtling toward the earth to kill everyone except those who have embraced the darkness. Because of Oliver we know that Clark has the power to inspire people and save them but he needs to find a way to inspire the whole world. Hmmm….I wonder what he could do….
This second hour also brought back the fantastic Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor! While Tess (Cassidy Freeman) is trying to warn the world about Apokalips, she is kidnapped by thugs of Lionel Luthor (the amazing John Glover) who reveals that he intends to use her heart to bring to life a sort of Frankenstein version of Lex made of failed clone bits. Tess escapes in a flash of awesome ass-kickery but Lex still comes back thanks to Lionel giving his soul to Darkseid who gives him Lionel’s heart. Gross.
What I liked most about the return of Lex is that he basically gives the final push Clark needs to become Superman. They only get one scene together but in it Lex established their relationship as one of mutual need. A great hero needs a great villain and that’s what these two are for each other. Clark vows to always be there to stop him but for now he has to focus on Apokalips and saving the earth. You know, the usual.
Lex eventually kills his sister, Tess but not before she hits him with a chemical that wipes his memory clear of everything that has come before. This might sound a little hokey but it gives a Lex a fresh start that ties in nicely to the Superman stories we’ve seen and read before in the comics, TV, and movies.

But let’s be honest – the real meat of this final episode was to see Clark fully embrace his destiny to become Superman and it is done almost sublimely. When confronted by a Darkseid-possessed corpse of Lionel, Clark sort of gets his ass handed to him but then Jor-El steps in and gives Clark a little freeze frame while reeling from a punch. During this time out Clark is treated to visions of his heroic feats from the past ten years and if you’re like me you were covered in goosebumps. When he snaps out of this montage he finds himself levitating in his barn and flies straight at Lionel utterly destroying him. Insert me grinning like an idiot.Things then step up even further at the Fortress when Jor-El tells Clark he is ready and reveals the Superman suit. In a beautiful moment Jonathan Kent steps out to hand Clark the suit and then, with two different fathers watching, Clark rockets into the sky in a flash of red, yellow and blue. By this point my grinning has turned into gleeful giggling and it only gets worse as Clark saves a plummeting Air Force One with Lois onboard. Seeing the smile on Lois’s face as she sets eyes on Superman outside the window for the first time was just priceless and if there was any doubt I think Erica Durance sealed her fate as the greatest Lois Lane ever in that moment.
Superman (still can’t believe I’ beach wedding dresses beach wedding dresses dresses for summer weddings dresses for summer weddings;m writing that name in a Smallville review!) then shoots up into the sky over the crowds of Metropolis sending the Apokalips planet away and bringing everyone back to the light. I’m practically cheering at this point but the show one-ups itself with a final scene set seven years in the future where Lois and Clark are in full steam at The Daily Planet, Lex has just been elected president, Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore in a surprise cameo) is snapping photos, and the voice of Michael McKean as Perry White can be heard booming from the editor’s office. And then, news of a bomb comes through and John Williams Superman theme starts to kick in. Just as the music swells Tom Welling as Clark Kent steps onto the roof of The Daily Planet and rips open his shirt to reveal the big red and yellow ‘S’! Consider my geek mind blown.
And that’s all she wrote. A part of me laments not being able to get a full, clear shot of Welling in the full suit, but maybe a little mystery is better? The show has always been addament about its “ summer wedding colors ;no tights, no flights” rule so maybe we’re already a little

spoiled and should enjoy what we got – which was a satisfying and incredibly well done conclusion to a story that has captured our imaginations for ten years. The ending felt a little rushed but they gave us everything we could have hoped for and maybe a little more so my hat is off to the show’ cheap summer bridesmaid dresses s producers for respectfully wrapping up a series that has often been mocked as silly and tired with a mature and well-crafted final episode for the ages.Without a few extra viewings I can’ affordable beach wedding dresses affordable beach wedding dresses;t accurately place this finale in the ranks of my favorite Smallville episodes but I can safely say that it will likely be somewhere near the top. This is certainly an end of era. Although I know they probably aren’t reading this I’d like to send out a big congratulations to the cast and crew for ten years of excellent television production. I think special kudos go to Tom Welling for leading this remarkably show for so long. It is rare to see an actor stay on a series for this many seasons but I know I’m among countless others who are thankful and will always think of him as one of the great Clark Kent/Supermans.
Superman will certainly fly again in countless mediums including Zack Snyder’s take on the character in next year’s Man of Steel film, but Smallville has without a doubt earned a major spot in the annals of the Superman legacy. I am confident that future generations will pour over the vast DVD collection of this series to enjoy the tale of a farm boy from Kansas on the most superpowered adventure ever. I, for one, know that despite the absence of new episodes I’ll never stop watching. And as this finale episode taught us – the story always keeps going.
